Pune can't beat Chennai, yet again: The Talking Points

Chennaiyin FC registered their second win of the campaign against FC Pune in a tight contest. Sereno's towering header proved the difference as the former champions won the tie 1-0, extending their unbeaten run against Pune to 7 matches.

Tight First half that lacked quality in the box

The first twenty minutes of the game saw no shots taken from either side in open play. While the game picked pace post the 20 minute mark both sides were unable to apply the finishing touches. While Marcelinho was guilty of being a tad selfish inside the box, Nelson's header was cleared off the line in the first half. Lot of chances were created in the first half but neither team were able to take advantage of those.

Jerry, the gem in the Chennaiyin crown

Jerry was expected to have a torrid time tonight in the left back role, coming up against the likes of Marcelinho and Diego but the 19 year old Indian international was immense at the back. The emerging player of last season was excellent while going forward with his glorious crosses which asked questions for the Pune defence. The diminutive left back was awarded the hero of the match and it was nothing more than what he deserved today. Chennaiyin FC are building a solid back line and Jerry has become an indispensable part of it, over taking Dhanachandra as a regular in the team sheet. Chennaiyin FC are nurturing some excellent talents in their club and Jerry will definitely be their crown jewel.

Defensive Midfielders shut down the creative outlets

The game revolved around who out of Marcelinho and Raphael will provide the Midas touch in the number 10 role. But to the intrigue of many viewers the defensive midfielders from both sides were able to successfully shut down shop for the Brazilians. While Tebar and Adil made sure that Raphael didn't have much time on the ball, it was Ganesh and Bikramjit who constantly got on Marcelinho's nerve. The game was a tactically enticing contest and both coaches will be proud of their defensive midfielders.

Clock ticking for Jeje

Jeje is an untouchable in the Chennaiyin FC starting eleven. But slowly but steadily his place as a number 9 is being questioned by the critics. When Jude came on, he was able to hold up the ball upfront against a stern back line of Pune. Jeje has enjoyed many successfull nights in Pune but this was yet another frustrating performance, his third in a row. With Jude up and running, Rafi waiting on the wings, Jeje has to find his scoring boots soon before he is dropped to bench.

FC Pune is Chennaiyin's Bunny

In football, history and stats don't stand for much. At times like this, one is left to wonder how much of a psychological effect does stats and history have on a team. Pune lost their 5th match against Chennai having played them 7 times. Pune has never beaten Chennai and the time was ripe for the team from Maharashtra to get the better of Gregory's men. Pune was labelled as early season title contenders by many but yet again they ran into a familiar wall, the Chennaiyin FC. It will be interesting to see what happens when these two teams take the stage again in Marina Arena.
