Indian Super League’s first ever goalscorer Fikru Teferra is all set to join Mohun Bagan this week. The club has had initial talks with the Ethiopian and his agent and will take decision this week. It’s also expected that Fikru maybe asked to join the Mariners’ army before the Bengal Derby scheduled for this Sunday.

Team Jersey contacted Fikru to know details about the deal and understood that the club showed extreme interest in signing him and the player is awaiting the final confirmation. Fikru is currently based in Johannesburg, South Africa and is a free agent after plying his trade with Highlands Park, a club plays in the South African top flight— National Football League.

Fikru Teferra or Fikru is the name that the fans of the ISL Franchise Chennaiyin FC chanted last in 2015 in their title-winning season. Before Chennaiyin, Fikru was seen donning the Red & White stripes for the Bengali Franchise Atletico de Kolkata(Currently ATK) a season before, winning them their maiden trophy. Besides the two titles, Fikru is mostly remembered for his 28th minute screamer from the edge of the penalty box to record the first-ever ISL goal on his name in the history books, against Mumbai City FC.

The 31-year old began his Professional football career in 2004-05 with the Ethiopian top flight club St. George FC and has captained for the Ethiopian National Football Team that participated in the 2012 CECAFA Cup.

“Me and my agent have already had a long discussion with the club and are waiting to see how it moves forward…” said Fikru.

“I’m a free agent now and would love to come back to India to carry on my legacy… ”, he added.

This addition in the current Mohun Bagan squad would be an interesting proposition. As the club is currently hanging in the lower half of the table with 13 points from nine matches, nine points behind the league toppers Minerva Punjab, Mohun Bagan is under serious transition after letting go of their star figures to ISL and East Bengal.

Well, as Fikru himself considers India to be the second most important destination through his 15-year long career after Ethiopia where he won the Ethiopian Premier League twice, would he be able to revive his lost sheen on Bagan’s expense this time?

Who will win the I-League title this season?
Minerva Punjab
East Bengal
Mohun Bagan
Indian Arrows
