A Draw that's probably sunk Blasters and ATK's ship: The Talking Points

Sabari Jagannathan  |  Indian Super League  |  9 Months Ago

It was an entertaining 2-2 draw in the salt lake stadium as both teams in the bottom of the table struggled to get an elusive victory. Kerala took the lead twice in the game but were unable to hold on to their lead as an excellent header from Thorpe secured a point for the hosts.

Hollywood signings let down the defending Champions

It is fair to say that the title defence has come to a feeble end for the side from Kolkata. They never really got going in this year's tournament and it will hurt for them to miss out on the semifinals for the first time in the tournament's short history. The kind of recruitment policies ranged from bizarre to confusing. They let go of two of their best centre back's who are currently doing well in Indian Super league. This game was only the second time this season that they have managed to score more than one goal. Robbie Keane was brought in to score loads of goals but the former football world's superstar has spent so long on sidelines that you will be forgiven if you thought he never really got on the plane to India. The ISL history suggests that it is not star names that win you the league but a well planned effective recruitments are the key. Kolkata will be kicking themselves for not retaining their title winning core team.

A draw that will hurt both sides

Though only one team had a realistic chance of making it to the top 4 coming into this game, Ashley believed that the defending champions could still scrape through if they can win their remaining games. So it is fair to say that neither teams would be happy with this draw which has hurt both their chances of making it to the knockouts. Kerala Blasters had many chances and a goal line clearance of the last minute of injury time denied the visitors yet another last gasp victory. Kolkata will be happy with a point after four straight losses but their hopes of making it to the top four have all but vanished.

Home advantage. What's that?

It is often expected for the hosts to.have an edge over the visitors in any football game. Interestingly the visiting teams have won  7 of the last 9 ISL games, the other 2 ending in draw. It was yet another night where the hosts were playing catch up with the visitors. The next game against Bengaluru and Goa promises to be a high scoring thriller and the team from South will look to break this weird woodoo.

Ashley Westwood deserves to stay in Kolkata

Kolkata have not scored many goals this season. Their squad has been tested with injury list getting lengthier with each game. They never really got into the tournament but the Kolkata management will have to stick with Ashley and give him the time & resource to build a solid team to once again challenge for the title. Ashley is no newbie to Indian football as the former BFC manager has been a fan favourite down south. It is that time of the season for the defending champions to look at the positives, silver linings and lessons from this season. The main lesson they must have learned through this journey is that one should never change a winning combination. This side under Ashely looks very much capable of being a winning combination.
