Four teams. One Coveted Title. Who will win? Here are all the possible scenarios...

Sabari Jagannathan  |  I-League  |  1 Year Ago

It was intense. It was a blood bath. It was a roller coaster ride. Finally four teams have survived and will be entering the final match day to win the premier league competition of India. No Oscar winning script writer could have written a better script for the final match day. Minerva had it all in their hand but it looked like they blew their chance. But East Bengal played out a thrilling draw yesterday and once again Minerva are in the driving seat. All this while Neroca and Mohun Bagan have quietly kept a close tab on both teams and will be looking to lift the title.

Minerva Punjab – Title beckons

Minerva will be taking on Churchill Brothers in the final league game of their campaign. They have a simple equation in front of them. Win the game, win the trophy. The game however will be anything but simple. Churchill Brothers desperately need a win to avoid relegation from India’s top tier.  The 2 time I league champions will fight tooth and nail to retain their spot in the top tier.

Minerva can take solace from the fact that Churchill have been in horrific form in the recent past picking up only 1 point from their last 5 games. In the event of a draw between the two, Churchill will get relegated and Minerva will hope for a draw between Neroca and East Bengal. They will still be able to win the title based on head to head.

All will not be lost for Minerva should they lose the match as they will still win the title if Mohun Bagan fail to win their game and Neroca and East Bengal play out a draw.

Survival instincts are primal and Churchill will be gunning for blood. Interestingly Minerva lost their reverse fixture against Churchill and will have to avoid a repeat.

Possible Scenarios for winning title

Minerva Win – Title

Minerva Draw- Neroca and East Bengal to draw

Minerva loss- Mohun Bagan to lose or draw, Neroca and East Bengal to draw

Neroca- Newbie’s on the verge of history

This is the first season in top tier for the side from Manipur. The former 2nd division winners were in the mix throughout the season and stumbled at penultimate hurdle against Mohun Bagan. A win against Mohun Bagan would have potentially sealed the title for the Manipur lads but a loss at home means that they will go into the final match day with their fate not on their hands.

They have to win their game at all costs and hope that Minerva don’t win theirs. The reverse fixture between Neroca and East Bengal ended 1-1, a result which both team will like to avoid.

Possible Scenarios for title

Neroca Win- Minerva loss/draw

East Bengal — the Elusive I-league is at a touching distance

The Indian football giants have never won the I-league. With the talks of merger on the horizon this has every probability of being the last chance for the traditional power houses to get their hands on the trophy. In order to do that, they will have to win their match against Neroca and hope both Minerva and Mohun Bagan fail to win their games.

A win for Mohun Bagan will end their title hopes as the mariners have the better head to head against them. They could win the title should Bagan lose and Minerva draw their respective games. First things first, they have to win theirs. It won’t be straight forward against fellow title contenders.

Possible Scenarios

East Bengal Win – Minerva lose/draw, Mohun Bagan lose/draw

Mohun Bagan- Mariners chance to make history

For the large part of the title race they were the outsiders. They looked to have fallen out of the race but three consecutive wins has put them right on track to lift the title.

They simply have to win their game against the giant killing Gokulam FC. The side from Kerala defeated East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Minerva in consecutive games in the final stretch of the tournament and were pivotal in taking the title race to the final match day. A win will not suffice as Bagan will want Churchill brothers to win against Minerva and Neroca to lose or draw against East Bengal.

Mohun Bagan’s victory could at the very least ensure that their arch rivals East Bengal cannot lift the title and nothing will be more pleasing for the mariners other than that, except of course the title. They can do their part today at 8:00 pm against Gokulam FC.

Possible Scenarios

Mohun Bagan win- Minerva to lose, Neroca draw/loss

Four teams. Two big names. Two underdogs. One coveted title. While the sister league was ever so predictable with Bengaluru storming their way to the top, the top tier league of Indian football is having the viewers in its firm grasp. Who will come out on top? Who will withstand the test of nerves? Rest assured, this promises to be an exciting finish to an enthralling campaign.

Will Indian football have its Agueroooo moment?
