It has now been confirmed that La Liga outfit Girona FC will be now the first team to play in India, as they will be playing matches on July 27 and 28, in Kochi. Reports confirm that the games will be against the Kerala Blasters of the Indian Super League and the Melbourne City of the A-League respectively. This will be a really positive step for Indian football, which has slowly grown over the years.

After India hosted the FIFA U-17 World Cup last year, which saw some decent success and the recent Intercontinental win, it is now time for more growth in terms of international recognition.

With that being said, Girona will become only the second team, out of Europe’s top five football leagues to make the trip to the country and play friendly matches there.

India has been slowly growing into a nation that promotes and loves the game of football at a much bigger level, than it has known to in the past and this will be a huge step in the right direction for the country with regards to the development of the sport as a whole.

It was back in September 2016 that the first office of the La Liga was inaugurated in Delhi, showcasing that the future of football in the country is bright, with such new milestones being reached every year.

Also, the fan-base over the years has been growing, with the regular telecasts of live games and with the FIFA World Cup also going on that has everyone hooked on to it, this is the perfect time for some more good news.

The couple of games that they play, will be part of Girona's pre-season fixtures for the 2018-19 La Liga campaign. The team that got promoted from La Liga second division back in 2016-17 for the first time ever in their nearly 88-year history, managed a 10th place finish in Spain’s top flight of football.

They have since then been growing as feel and this will be a really great for both parties, who will look to promote the beautiful game of football.

Special credit goes to the league's governing body which was responsible in helping bring one of its top ten sides to India now, a pathway to bring top European clubs to the Asian sub-continent. The team that is nicknamed 'Gironis', won the hearts of the fans with some solid displays in their debut season and also the previous campaign that just concluded a month ago.

If more such initiatives are taken in the distant future, the game can surely grow at a nation-wide level and it can influence the neighbouring countries as well. India can finally hope to achieve its dream of once again playing on the grand stage yet again.

Whether that happens or not remains to be seen, though the fans would be delighted with this news and will want to go and watch a team from the first division of football in Spain, play here. Go grab your tickets now!!
