The wives and girlfriends of the England players had created quite a stir at the 2006 World Cup. Their antics in the German spa town of Baden-Baden had led to a paparazzi frenzy that the players admitted some time later had affected their concentration.

So four years on, the England manager Fabio Capello made sure there wouldn’t be a repeat and imposed a curfew that allowed players to see their loved ones only for a few hours after each game. that it made much difference to the team’s play. After a stuttering performance in the group stage, the Three Lions were destroyed by Germany in the first knockout stage.
