In an era marked by the scarcity of good quality Indian coaches, Mohun Bagan opted to rope in Khalid Jamil, after the departure of Shankaralal Chakraborty, following their second consecutive defeat at the hands of Neroca and Real Kashmir respectively.

In a communiqué made yesterday, the club announced the arrival of former East Bengal coach, Khalid Jamil, who was famous for his title triumph with Aizawl and was infamously cursed by the Mohun Bagan fans for a few cheeky comments about black magic. The decision to bring him onboard was greeted with mixed bag reactions. With probably one of the worst start to the seasons in the recent past, things nosedived into a consistent tailspin, when Bagan failed to fire.

The club statement read, “With immense pleasure, we wish to inform you that Khalid Jamil has been appointed as the new head coach of Mohun Bagan Senior football team for the remainder of 2018-2019 football season. Please note that the Team will resume training on Tuesday at Mohun Bagan ground under the new head coach.”

The statement also read, "Tomorrow he will address the press, post the official pre-match press conference".

Bagan is languishing at the 6th position in the table with 15 points from 11 games, with East Bengal just ahead of them, despite playing two games short. East Bengal will lock horns with Indian Arrows today to compete for their 10th fixture in the tournament. It looks like that with the kind of experience Jamil holds, Bagan might be able to better their performance and position in the league.

Khalid Jamil has always been famous for his revival of struggling clubs. With Mumbai FC he arrived in the Indian football scene and his meteoric rise to the top followed with his I-League triumph with Aizawl FC who was on the verge of the exit in the preceding season. Jamil’s stint with East Bengal was marred by a few poor performances by the team, owing to the constant failure of his foreign lot. He made headlines for all the wrong reasons towards the end of the season when one of his jibes encompassing black magic went viral on social media.

It should be noted that Mohun Bagan has an action-packed month ahead of them where they host four home games while their home record for the season has been nothing short of abysmal; facing the likes of Minerva Punjab, NEROCA FC and their archrivals East Bengal in the final week of the month. With the championship hopes already dimming as they are adrift 9 points of the league leaders, Chennai City, it will be highly imperative for the team to finish their campaign on a positive note.
