Delhi Dynamos signs ex-Real Madrid player and youth manager Miguel Angel Portugal Vicario

Delhi Dynamos were on the search of a new Head Coach for the upcoming ISL season to replace Gianluca Zambrotta. The franchise, desperate to make their mark in the upcoming ISL has finally got home another Marquee as manager. The 61 year old former Real Madrid hero Miguel Angel Portugal Vicario is someone with great respect in the footballing fraternity and comes to the Capital after having many stints with the La Liga and division 2 clubs besides managing Real Madrid B and C teams.

 

 

Who is Miguel Angel Portugal Vicario? 

 

 

 

During his playing career, Miguel Portugal played for clubs like Burgos CF, CD Mirandés, Real Madrid, Cádiz CF, Rayo Vallecano, CD Castellón, Real Burgos CF, Real Valladolid and Córdoba CF. With Real Madrid, he has claimed many accolades. He remained at the Spanish Capital Giants from 1979-1983 (one year loaned at Cádiz), where he won the Domestic Double in his very first year featuring in 27 matches during his spell.

 

 

Miguel Portugal started his managerial career in the mid-90’s by taking the charge of Real Madrid's B and C teams. In 1999, he had faced a bumpy start to his First-Team-Managerial Career with the La Liga second division side CD Toledo where he was fired only after a couple of months.

 

 

Spending an exile for a few years from football, Miguel returned to his Coaching Duty with his former club Córdoba. In 2005-06, he made a return to Real Madrid Castilla. On 6 July 2006 he took over at Racing de Santanderm where he helped the to finish a respectable 10th position in the La Liga. In November 2008, Miguel was on the verge of succeeding Bernd Schuster as the Manager of Real Madrid, but president Ramón Calderón had appointed Juande Ramos instead.

 

 

In November 2009, Portugal had made a  return to Racing on a two-year deal. In early February 2011, he was sacked by new club owner, Indian Ahsan Ali Syed even though he had made the club finish above the relegation zone in the Spanish Top Flight. In 2015-16 season, Miguel managed  Real Valladolid  producing some great results. In 2016, he managed Club Sportif Constantinois, the oldest club of Algeria finishing 9th in the League.
