Indian Super League Franchise Club Chennaiyin FC has completed the signing of their new manager to fill up the vacant space left by Italian Marco Materazzi. The new Head Coach appointed for the 2017-18 season of the ISL is 63-year-old Brit, John Gregory.

Who is John Gregory?

#1 The Lincolnshire-born former Central Midfielder has six International Caps to his name for the English National team and has a mammoth tally of over 600 appearances in the English Football with 83 goals to his name!

#2 While playing for Aston Villa from 1977-79, Gregory became the only player to play in every outfield position, wearing every number from 2 to 11, which remains a record till date. Impressive, isn't it?

The most number of games in his career came for Northampton Town, followed by Queens Park Ranger where he had enjoyed the most glittering part of his playing career for the latter. He was an integral member of the QPR side that reached the FA Cup final in 1982 and were promoted to the First Division a year later after finishing as the Champions of Second Division. He also helped QPR finishing fifth and qualify for the UEFA Cup (currently UEFA Europa League) in 1984. Later he signed for the fallen giants of English Football, Derby County where he was the centrepiece of their midfield in their way to getting promoted to the Second Division at the end of the 1985–86 season and to the First Division a year later.

John has managed clubs like Portsmouth, Plymouth Argyle, Wycombe Wanderers, Aston Villa, Derby County, Queens Park Rangers, Maccabi Ahi Nazareth, F.C. Ashdod and FC Kairat. His most successful time as a manager came during his time with Aston Villa (1998-2002) when he had taken over the reigns of the then league leaders who were struggling in the Mid-table of the English Premiership. Under Gregory’s coaching, Aston Villa were the runners-up to Chelsea in the 2000 FA Cup, the last ever FA Cup final at the Old Wembley Stadium. His last managerial period was from 2013 to 2016 with Crawley Town which is followed by the new challenge he has taken with Chennayin FC in the Indian Super League.

John Gregory, on his new project said, “I am very excited to have joined Chennaiyin FC and would like to thank the club owners for believing in me and giving me this wonderful opportunity. Chennaiyin has been one of the most consistent teams in the ISL so far and I want to continue the great work done by Marco in the first three seasons. I am determined to help the club win the ISL trophy back for the people of Chennai and Tamil Nadu.”

Delighted Chennaiyin FC co-owner Vita Dani said, “We are very happy to have appointed John as our head coach. He has immense experience at the very highest level of the game both as a player and coach and his vision and personality matches our club philosophy and ambition. We look forward to a great season under his guidance.”

Will this new appointment retain the series of the last three seasons of ISL and make the Chennai-based club the ISL Champion again?
