Kolkata Derby: A match to savour the legacy in the Calcutta Premier League

Mohun Bagan will be on a look out to put East Bengal's seven-year dominance in the Calcutta Football League to an end. The two arch rivals will lock horns for the title in the season's first derby at the Kanchenjunga Stadium today.

38 time winners, East Bengal haven’t lost the title for the last seven consecutive seasons and if they succeed in even drawing the game against their local rivals, that should do it and make it more than sufficient for them to extend their reign.

Mohun Bagan will have to win to go past East Bengal who are ahead on goal difference and they are jointly on 22 points. Shankarlal’s men last won the title in 2009 and will be determined to capitalise in the derby.

The attacking duo consisting of Kamo Stephane Bayi and Ansumana Kromah have been quite fruitful up front in the line up of Mohun Bagan and will play a significant hand if they are to deny Khalid Jamil his first title with the red and gold side.

East Bengal will miss the services of star striker, V P Suhair - while Trinidad and Tobago forward Willis Plaza has been announced fit to play; paired with Syrian midfield wizard, Mahmoud Al Amna. These two shall be the key players to look out for. Having won the I-League title with Aizawl FC following a dream journey, Jamil will be all set to take up the East Bengal mantle, and his first real test will be the stage thats all set for him today in the form of a Bengal derby.

Speaking about the local battle during the pre match conference, Khalid said, “No doubt there's pressure for Sunday's match. We made a good start in the tournament, and now, we need to end it perfectly."

On the other hand his nemesis, Shankarlal Chakraborty has sky high hopes from his squad, to end East Bengal's dominant reign. The Mohun Bagan coach said, “In football, nothing is impossible. We are ready for this challenge.”

We are looking forward to a competitive game of good football as the two local giants meet each other on the field to battle it out. May the best team win!
